Pack is a collection of audio and video codecs for Microsoft Windows that enables the operating system and its software to play various audio and video formats generally not supported by the operating system itself. K-Lite Codec Pack also includes several related tools, including Media Player Classic Home Cinema (MPC-HC), Media Info Lite, and Codec Tweak Tool.[3]
here are five editions of K-Lite Codec Pack, all being available free of charge.[3]
Basic: The Basic edition is the smallest version and enables a Microsoft Windows computer to play the contents of AVI, Matroska (MKV), MP4, Ogg and Flash Video(FLV) files. It only consists of ffdshow (for audio and video decoding),DirectVobSub (for subtitle decoding), Codec Tweak Tool and four other minor components.[4] Basic edition is the only edition that does not include MPC-HC or MediaInfo Lite.[5]
Standard: The Standard edition includes all features of the Basic edition plus a DVD Video decoder, Media Info Lite and MPC-HC. This edition enables DVD playback in Microsoft Windows.[6] This package is recommended for normal users.[3]
Full: The Full edition includes 31 additional components and four additional tools beyond those included in the Standard edition, as well as adding video encoding capabilities to Microsoft Windows PCs. However, no encoding or conversion tool is included in the package.[7]
Mega: The Mega edition adds fourteen additional components not present in any other edition. Amongst these components, there is the original Media Player Classic (in addition to MPC-HC), GSpot Codec Information Appliance and additional language files for MPC-HC.[8]
64-bit: The 64-bit edition is an independent package of codecs that can be used on an x64 version of Microsoft Windows. (It is not supported on IA-64 versions of Windows.) VLC media player (also known as VLC) is a highly portable free and open-source media player andstreaming media server written by the VideoLAN project. Windows Media Player 2012.. A common annoyance with many media players, WMP included, is not having the right codec. WMP will try to detect which codecs are required and provide a location to download them, but this is hit-and-miss and less than convenient if all you want to do is play a video. In recognition of this, WMP12 includes support for H.264 video, AAC audio, and both Xvid and DivX video, in addition to all the formats supported by WMP11 in Vista (MPEG2, WMV, MP3, etc.). With these new codecs, WMP should support the majority of video found on the Internet out of the box.

The area of WMP12 that has seen the most work is how it works with networked resources. WMP11 has the ability to browse the libraries of other users on the local network, as long as they’re using WMP, too. WMP12 extends this to allow browsing not only of WMP libraries, but also of iTunes libraries. With the aforementioned H.264 and AAC support, WMP12 can play most iTunes media. It’s only “most” because, of course, Apple won’t license its FairPlay DRM to third parties, so WMP is unable to play DRM-protected iTunes Store tracks.
It’s not just libraries that are improved. WMP12 makes it easier to play back audio or video on remote devices, a feature dubbed “Play To.” WMP12 can stream to other computers in your HomeGroup, so, for example, you can browse your library on your laptop but actually play back on the HTPC connected to your sound system.

AV fans, lest we forget, would happily spend hundreds of pounds on an oxygen-free, organic copper, hand crafted single-direction cable and claim it heralded a new ageof enlightenment. Us mortals with human senses and inhuman bank managers can only look on and wonder. Those cables are probably poppycock, but could 3D be the real deal – an actual revolution?
If you’ve not got a king’s ransom to spend but want to find out for yourself, don’t fret – Cyberlink PowerDVD 5 could be the answer. It aims to transform your DVDs into an all-out 3D experience.
Before we get to the caveats, let’s have some fun. Cyberlink claims it can transform or upscale video in almost any digital format and turn it into just about any type of 3D movie. All you do is insert a DVD, click the interface’s ’3D’ button, select the depth of field you’d like and choose your display system: TrueTheater 3D will do the rest.
The results are, as you’d expect, variable. Take a rough old 2D movie (we tried a Rolling Stones concert) and things go wrong: we found that occasionally a guitar appeared to pop out of the screen. So don’t expect your Dad’s Army DVD collection to be transformed into an Avatar-style 3D spectacular. But give the system an old 3D movie that demands red-and-blue glasses, wait for it to do its work and then don a pair of Nvidia’s 3D glasses, and the results are more convincing.
Finally, when Blu-ray 3D arrives, Cyberlink will offer a free patch and you’ll be able to watch the latest generation of digital 3D movies at home. With this grade of source material you’ll experience 3D as it’s intended to be seen by the movie director.
Now those caveats. First, don’t expect PowerDVD 10 Ultra 3D to transform a tired old Pentium 3 into a home entertainment system that will make you spill your popcorn. You’ll need a solid dual-core processor and a modern graphics card – an ATI Radeon HD2400 or an Nvidia GeForce 8800GT are the minimum.
For 3D playback you’ll also need a 3D display and some 3D glasses. A Samsung SM2233RZ 3D monitor and an Nvidia 3D Vision setup would be perfect, but will probably cost you £350 all-in.
There’s one final problem: the headaches. Following a demo of PowerDVD 10 on the best kit available, some of our team experienced terrible eyestrain and headaches. Many people are concerned about 3DTV and headaches (join the debate on our website), so before splashing out on the equipment you need to see 3D, give it a good long try in person. With some aspirin.
